For the first time, West Australian herb and spice producers are being asked to consider paying an industry levy.

Ten per cent of Australia's herb and spice production comes from Western Australia.

Annually the entire industry is worth about $100 million.

The levy would be half a per cent of the value of the product at the first point of sale, so if a bunch of herbs cost $2, the levy would be one cent.

The Herb and Spice Industry Association's Peter McFarlane says without a levy, he doesn't think research and biosecurity control will advance.

The industry will hold some consultation sessions at Canning Vale on the Tuesday 20th July.
